DOIG GATHERING CANADA
AUGUST 18th - 21st, 2010
IAN'S LATEST THOUGHTS...

As it stands now, I plan on having a "meet-and-greet on the evening of Wednesday the 18th, followed on Thursday morning by a talk from our leading local historian (Susan Code) on the history of Perth from its founding onwards, a session on the family genaeology by the family historian (which I haven't yet cleared with him, by the way); a morning trip to a local sugarbush for breakfast on Friday, spending the morning at their maple sugar/syrup museum to explore the history of syrup making and its technology, as well as tours by wagon through their sugarbush.   That leaves Friday afternoon for a session on Scottish immigration into Lanark County and area and a closing dinner in the evening.   Spare time activities I'd propose might include  walking tours of the town led by Susan Code... a chance to paddle the lower Tay River in the great big "voyageur canoes" modelled on those that were used in the early fur trade... a possible boat tour of the central part of the Rideau Canal - a World Heritage Site - down to, say, Chaffey's Locks for a lunch/dinner, drinks - whatever - at a very nice restaurant at the locks etc.   That would leave all kinds of time to explore the area... shop locally or elsewhere... get to know the local populace, etc.   It would also allow people to visit Ottawa, Kingston, Montreal, Toronto... the Thousand Islands and Upstate New York or for the adventurous, Algonquin  (wilderness) Park before or after the event.   And of course, to attend the North Lanark Highland Games on the Saturday.

Any and all input on the above suggested programme would be most appreciated.
